SHE'S FORMIDABLE, OUTSPOKEN, AND WAS ONE OF HOLLYWOODS GREATEST STARS.
"The
Yankee voice over the intercom is unmistakeable; formidable and breathy at the
same time. And, as she opens the door to her elegant, memorabilia-strewn West
Hollywood apartment, it is accompanied by the flashing blue eyes and her one
permanent accessory; a classically clutched cigarette." quoted in an interview
just before her death.
Bette Davis had a career spaning more than 60 years as a screen legend. She
was nominated for 10 best actress oscars, and awarded 2 oscars, one for her
role in "Dangerous" where she played an alcaholic by the name of Joyce
Heath, screened in 1935. The other as a cunning Southern Belle, Julie Marston
in "Jezebel" from 1938. Countless other awards have been bestowed
upon her, including an Emmy for her crusty New Englander in 'Strangers,"
the story of a mother and daughter (1979). She's even had a rock and roll tribute
from Kim Carnes in her song Bette Davis Eyes. In 1989 Bette Davis recieved the
Film Society of Lincoln Center's annual gala tribute. Past recipients have been
Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert and Lord Olivier. "i'm a bit greedy
about awards she would say."
Bette Davis had 4 husbands. She was asked once how she would like to be remembered
in a films. " well pretty monotonous really," she said "always
acting in films and picking up awards, and of course there have been a few husbands."
Bette Davis daughter B.D. was born when she was 39 years of age which she says
was amazing, though later in her life they had a falling out, especially when
she wrote a book about her titled "My Mothers Keeper." It hurt her
a lot but she was a survivor. She survived a stroke and a masectomy in her life
until finally she died on October 6, 1989 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.More

One of the most bizarre things she said she had to do while employed by Universal
Studios "was screen test 25 leading men, including Gilbert Roland and John
Boles, while they made love to me , so the producers could see how sexy they
were. as a young yankee girl i'd never been so embarrased."
People are always finding Bette Davis quotes such as "what a dump!"
and "fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night" but her
favourite was "I'd like ta kiss ya, but I just washed my hair." AS
Madge in Cabin the Cotton (1932). There were so many memorable quotes, another
is "If you could read my mind, you'd shrivel where you stand." and
"From head to foot, I'm one quivering mass of loathing." --as Joyce
Arden in IT'S LOVE I'M AFTER (1937).
